Hi! My name is Sara Landry, I'm currently in grade eleven at ISB and I am one of the co-founders of ISB's American Sign Language Club (ASL) club. One of the main reasons I started this club was because I am a child of a deaf adult (CODA) and I had realized I really wanted to connect and improve communication with my parents more. As I searched for sign language classes in Thailand I realized that there was very little accessibility for sign language in my community. So I decided to start ASL club to raise awareness and also increase access to education on sign language.
Hello! I'm Wimonsiri (Belle) Liao and I was in 10th grade when Sara and I initiated and started ISB's American Sign Language (ASL) Club. I have always been interested in learning sign language, however, I was intimidated by the task of picking up an entirely new language that utilized a form of communication that was unfamiliar with. Once I heard about Sara's idea - from Sara herself - that she was thinking of introducing an ASL interest group to ISB, I eagerly asked to join in; hoping to learn something new and spread awareness on an important topic. Thus, this was the start of how the club came to be. As I taught myself sign language, specifically ASL, in order to teach others, my interest has only grown since. I glad to have played a part in raising awareness about sign language and its the importance at ISB.
